Beyond the Game: Founders Memorial Lecture Spotlights Character in Sports

UB kicked off its 80th Founding Anniversary with the first of the Founders Memorial Lecture Series featuring UAAP Executive Director Atty. Rebo Saguisag Jr. on the transformative power of youth sports. This insightful session explores how athletics go beyond the game to build character, resilience, and the essential leadership skills needed for the next generation.

A deep dive into how athletics shape the leaders of tomorrow.

As part of the University of Batangas’ 80th Founding Anniversary, the UB community gathered for a special edition of the Founders Memorial Lecture (FML) that centers on Youth Sports and Development. This academic tradition honors the University’s visionaries by fostering intellectual discourse on pivotal societal themes. The first lecture focused on Youth and Sports Development with the powerful theme: “Youth Sports and Development: Building Character and Skills.”

Leading the discussion was Atty. Rene “Rebo” Saguisag Jr., the Executive Director of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP). Because of his unique background as a lawyer and administrator, Atty. Saguisag offered a pragmatic perspective. He examined the intersection of athletics, education, and governance. Furthermore, he bridged the gap between policy and play. He illustrated that sports programs go beyond simple competition.

The lecture explored the critical role of sports in holistic development, especially in an era of digital distractions. Atty. Saguisag discussed how the discipline of the game translates into essential life skills like resilience, teamwork, and ethical leadership. For the UB community, this message aligned perfectly with the “UBian” spirit, affirming that true strength is not just physical but also mental and moral.

Eight decades of shaping minds and building futures. Thank you for being part of our journey towards excellence in education.
